Jim Higgins RIP

21st Nov 2025
Jim Higgins, Carrigans Lower, Ballymote, Co. Sligo, formerly of Battlefield, Culfadda, Co. Sligo.

The death has occurred of Jim Higgins, Carrigans Lower, Ballymote, Co. Sligo. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, in the wonderful care of the staff of North West Hospice, having borne his illness with remarkable strength and dignity.

Jim taught in Ardkeeran NS in Riverstown, where he was also principal. Jim was a member of Cumann na mBunscol Shligigh and can be remembered on the side line in his suit! Many a battle between Geevagh NS and Ardkeeran NS was played out - with many a story after! Jim was also a member of Sligo INTO branch - having served as secretary, CEC rep and then as INTO President. Jim believed in unity among teachers - and remembered all the gains being a member of the INTO had attained. As INTO President Jim stated the high point of his office was representing the INTO at the INTO Mini 7's Games in Croke Park. Jim also acted as a judge at our National Awards - and attended our National Awards.

Retired former Principal of Ardkeeran National School, Riverstown, Co. Sligo and former President of the INTO, Jim will be sadly missed by his heartbroken family and friends and all those who knew him
