South Limerick Bids Farewell to Emly NS

18th Oct 2022

Emly NS have decided to leave the South Limerick schools division and play in the Tipperary Cumann na mBunscol division. It makes more sense for them as they could not represent the South if they won competitions and their children could not be selected for the Limerick Primary Game teams.

Emly NS (and also Kilross NS who amalgamated with Emly NS) played in the South Limerick Primary School division for 40 years. They have made their presence felt throughout their participation in the South, first hitting the headlines when winning the Division 1 hurling title in 1980. That victory over Kilmallock NS would be followed by many others over the years, right up to their last season in the South where they claimed the Roinn B football title.

They also had many players on South Divisional teams and their staff helped out with the management of these teams. Their former principals Pauline Finnan and Sean McManus, along with current principal Michelle O'Brien and staff worked hard to promote the games. There is no doubt that they have left their mark on the South division and one can expect the same impact when they take the field in County Tipperary.

With that, the last of the ‘outsiders’ leave the South Limerick Primary Schools division. The progressive nature of the organisation of games during the 1980s piqued the interest of schools from beyond County Limerick. At one stage the area covered by the competitions stretched from Mount Bruis in Tipperary to Churchtown in County Cork. Each school put their own stamp on the South and as a result a vibrant organisation remains.
