Longford Report   20/08/2014

Football: Our school leagues took place from mid-September until mid November. The boys are divided into 5 divisions based on a number of criteria, top 2 teams qualify for the final. Finals range from 7 a side up to 15 a side. The girls are divided into 4 divisions using similar criteria. Overall 18 teams played in finals over 2 Saturdays, these finals were held in Pearse Park on November 9th and 16th.

The schools Championships will commence in early March and run until the end of May. Competition layout is the same format as the League, however, there are B finals for Championship so twice as many teams get a chance to play in a final.

The mini-7s football competition will run again this year straight after the Easter break. This competition was re-introduced last year on a trial basis and was quite successful, finals will be run on a separate day and this tournament is used as the basis for selecting children to represent Longford in Croke Park.

Blitz's for 3rd and 4th class have been arranged in co-ordination with the county GDAs. Teams are also selected to play at half time of Longford's games in Pearse Park throughout the Spring and Summer.

Hurling: Indoor hurling competition will commence in January and run for 4-5 weeks. An indoor hurling blitz for 3rd/4th class are also being arranged for that time. The hurling and camogie championship is scheduled for February and competitions will run at 7 and 11 a side for boys, and at 9 a side for girls. This year we are making a conscious effort to increase the number of schools participating in this championship, so the commencement date has been moved forward to facilitate this.

Handball: Coaching is taking place primarily in some schools in North Longford at the moment, with a view to selecting representatives in the Leinster Competition. Handball walls are being sourced with a view to making those available to schools.

School Scór: Competition is due to take place in Term 2, generally in March or April depending on the Easter schedule.

Table Quiz: Table Quiz to be held at the end of January.

Athletics: County competition held in October.

Rounders: An information session for teachers is being arranged for Term 2 with a view to a blitz in Term 3. This would be the first formal rounders event for a number of years, so the information session would need to take place early in Term 2 to allow schools to prepare for this.
