ALLIANZ CUMANN NA MBUNSCOL LIATROMA LAUNCH FIRST EVER HURLING COMPETITION

Five schools entered 13 teams (8 boys’ teams and 5 girls’ teams) in the one-day competition which was held on April 2nd 2014 in the Astro-Turf pitches at Aura, Carrick on Shannon.

The first stage of the competition was played round-robin style with Ballinamore emerging to meet Gaelscoil Liatroma in the final. Gaelscoil proved too strong and won the competition outright with St. Clare’s N.S. Manorhamilton winning the girls’ competition.

The competition was a great success and the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol committee would like to thank Steven Feeney for his help on the day and Thomas Keenan for his work and support.

The excitement continued for the two victorious teams Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Liatroma teamed up with Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Cill Cheannaigh to arrange a trip to Nowlan Park, Kilkenny. Here, the twelve boys and ten girls from Leitrim were put through their paces in a professional training session by Brian Ryan, Kilkenny’s Games Manager and Under 21 Coach, and also by James Maher, Assistant Games Manager and Kilkenny Minor Coach. This was an unforgettable experience for the children, being coached by two of Kilkenny’s finest hurling coaches.

The young hurlers were then introduced to two Kilkenny Senior Hurling stars - Richie Power (6 Leinster titles, 6 All-Irelands, 2 NHL titles, 2 All-Star Awards) and Colin Fennelly (1 Leinster title, 2 All-Irelands, 1 NHL title 1 All-Ireland club title with Ballyhale Shamrocks).

There was great excitement as Richie and Colin answered questions, spoke of their experiences and signed hurls, sliotars, jerseys and helmets for the Leitrim contingent.

Then it was time to put their newly-learned skills to the test as they divided into teams to play some blitz-style hurling/camogie. The children enjoyed an experience that few Leitrim people ever have before - playing on the main pitch at the home of hurling, Nowlan Park.

Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Liatroma would like to thank the following people: Jim Fennelly, Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Cill Cheannaigh, Richie Power, Colin Fennelly, Brian Ryan and James Maher of Kilkenny GAA and the Kilkenny schoolchildren for a memorable day. We hope to build on this initiative in the coming years and to have many more schools competing in our hurling competition next year.
