Laois Report   20/08/2014


The AGM took place on Thursday, September 6th, 



The football leagues began on Tuesday 11th September with a total of 51 teams taking part in the boys (9 divisions) and 42 teams in the girls (8 divisions). The finals were held on 24th and 25th October in O’ Moore Park.

 The hurling leagues began on Tuesday 27th March with a total of 43 teams taking part in the hurling (7 divisions) and 33 teams in the camogie (6 divisions). A new development group began in the camogie for the all-girls schools in the county. The finals were held on 23rd and 24th May in O’ Moore Park.

Thanks to Phil Ryan who organized the ground hurling blitz in O’ Moore Park on June 6th.

Table Quiz

The table quiz took place on Thursday March 7th in the school hall of St. Colmans NS Stradbally. Many thanks to the teachers who helped out with collection, correction and stewarding. A special thank you to quizmaster Sean Mullaney. Ratheniska were winners on the night with The Heath second and Ballyadams third.


Mini Sevens

Football: 30 boys and 31 girls went to Stradbally on Wednesday 17th April. Many thanks to Fran Moloney and Pádraig Ashe for organising the venue, referees etc. Pj Daly (The Heath), Damien McCaul (Stradbally) and Erone Fitzpatrick (The Heath) were chosen to play at half-time in the All_Ireland senior Football semi-final/final.

Hurling: 25 boys and 24 girls went to Castletown on Friday 17th April. Fiona Delaney, David Brickley and Jim Kells organised the venue, referees etc. Liam Delaney (Castletown N.S.), Aimee Collier (Camross N.S.), Lauren Bourke (Paddock N.S.) and Amy Byrne (Sacred Heart Portlaoise) were selected.


Rounders/ Handball

Boys and girls and mixed rounders competitions were held in Emo, Stradbally and The Heath. Seventeen schools entered. Sacred Heart and The Heath won competitions. These were predominantly aimed at 5th class. Many thanks to Michael Dowling for all his hard work in organising and running this event.

Three schools entered the Cumann na mBunscol handball competition in Cullohill. Thanks to Niamh Campion and Darach Kennedy for organising this.

Laois were also represented in the Leinster U11 and U13 Cumann na mbunscol handball finals in Kilkenny on February 19th.  Eoghan Doheny and Pauric Dunne from Cullohill NS were in the U13 doubles section and went on to win the final.

Representative Games

  • On 18th May, twenty boys and twenty girls from different schools in Laois played at half time in the Laois v Antrim senior hurling championship match in O’ Moore Park.
  • On 24th May, two boys football representative teams from Laois participated in an inter county schools’ football tournament in Nowlan Park in Kilkenny against four other counties.
  • On 26th May, a team of boys and girls representing Laois schools played Louth at half time of the Laois v Louth Senior football championship match in O’ Moore Park.
  • On 2nd June ten boys from Laois played at half-time in the Laois v Carlow hurling match in O’ Moore Park. Twenty girls from the county also played a representative game.
  • On 16th June, a team of boys and girls representing Laois schools played Galway at half time of the Laois v Galway Leinster senior hurling semi-final in O’ Moore Park.
  • The lift and strike tournament took place in Carlow on Tuesday 18th June. The Laois team participated against five other counties.
  • Liam Delaney(Castletown N.S.), Ciárán Conroy( Paddock N.S.), Rory Deegan ( Cullohill N.S.), Aimee Collier (Camross N.S.), Lauren Burke(Paddock N.S.) Amy Byrne (Sacred Heart), Patricia Lalor (Killanure N.S.) PJ Daly (The Heath N.S.), Damien McCaul (Stradbally N.S.) and Erone Fitzpatrick (The Heath N.S.) all played at exhibition games in Croke Park at All-Ireland Semi-Finals or Finals day.

On 1st and 2nd February, Fiona Delaney and Eamonn Riall attended the A.G.M. of Cumann na mBunscol Náisiúnta in Down.

On 10th April, Fiona Delaney and Eamonn Riall attended the A.G.M. of Cumann na mBunscol Laighean in Newbridge. Congratulations to Fiona who was elected Cumann na mBunscol Laighean representative on the Leinster Council of the GAA.

3rd / 4th Class Blitzes

This year saw the inauguration of 3rd /4th class blitzes. There were 11 blitzes in football, with 30 schools participating and schools were grouped geographically. Blitzes took place in Mountmellick, Timahoe, Abbeyleix, Stradbally, The Rock, and Mountrath. Approximately 900 pupils participated in these events.

There were 6 blitzes in hurling, with 16 schools participating. Blitzes took place in The Heath, Mountmellick, Stradbally, Graiguecullen, Camross, Shanahoe, Ballyadams, Rathleague, The Rock, Portlaoise and Crettyard. Approximately 450 pupils participated in these events.

There was also a non-competitive football blitz day organized for schools that hadn’t entered Cumann na mBunscol leagues on June 12th and 3 schools participated in this.

National AGM

Laois will be hosting the Cumann na mBunscol National AGM this coming year on 8th February in the Heritage Killenard.


The AGM for forthcoming year took place on September 5th, 2013.
