West are Best after extra time in Limerick   01/12/2019

The curtain came down on the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol season last Tuesday night in the Gaelic Grounds as West Limerick and Limerick City contested both of the Inter Divisional Football competitions.

‘Playing the finals of the Larkin Shield and Sarsfield Cup under lights has proved to be a great success and wraps up our events on the playing fields for the year,’ according to Joe Lyons who is Cathaoirleach of Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Luimnigh.

The semi finals of the Larkin Shield were played the previous week in Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale.

Final: The final was eagerly anticipated. West Limerick scored from their first attack of the game and had three points on the scoreboard from Caoimhe Byrne, Emma Mullins and Cliodna Heffernan before the City girls opened their account. However, their first score was a goal which they followed up with a point to take the lead for the first time. Molly Awyee and Molly Tobin were dangerous every time they were in possession. However, West midfielder Emily McAuliffe soloed through the heart of the City defence and planted her shot between the uprights to level matters. West followed up with another point from Caoimhe Byrne to leave the game finely balanced at the interval.

Half-time: West Limerick 0-5: Limerick City 1-1.

West Limerick scored first after the interval to extend their lead but this was to be their last score of the half.  Both sides had opportunities but City scored two points to level matters. However, hard though they tried, neither side could snatch a winner and the game went to extra time.

Full time score: West Limerick 0-6: Limerick City 1-3.

The first half of extra time saw play swing from end to end but heroic defence by both teams meant that there was only one score in that period, a point to West Limerick from Ruby Molloy.

Half time of extra time: West Limerick 0-7: Limerick City 1-3

Limerick City tried all they knew to tie the scores but Jessica Kavanagh scored a goal after half-time and it was followed  with a pointby Róisín OConnor to stretch her side’s lead to five points. It was too much for the City girls and it was Cormac Behan’s charges who were celebrating when Jamie Fitzgerald blew the final whistle.

Full time score: West Limerick 1-8: Limerick City 1-3

After the game, Joe Lyons of Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Luimnigh presented the Larkin Shield to West captain Ornagh Barrett from Ahalin NS. Mr Lyons said that the final of the Larkin Shield would go down in history as a classic game exemplifying the best of Gaelic Football played in a sporting spirit.
