Search resumes for Shay Lawless   24/05/2019

The search to locate missing Trinity professor Séamus Lawless, who fell on Mount Everest last week, is set to resume today.

The climber went missing at an altitude of around 8,300m, just hours after fulfilling a lifetime ambition of reaching the peak of the world’s highest mountain on Thursday May 16th.

An assistant professor at the School of Computer Science in Trinity College, Séamus was one of four Irish people who climbed Mount Everest as part of a group called ‘Ireland on Everest’ this month.

A fundraising page set up on Friday night by the Trinity professor’s family has reached over a third of its €750,000 target.

The family issued an update yesterday to say that search efforts for Shay were able to resume as weather conditions on Everest had improved.

Séamus's wife, Pamela McDermott, teaches in Kilcoole Primary School and is well known in Cumann na mBunscol circles. Shay very kindly agreed to address the September 2017 General  Meeting  of Cumann na mBunscol. He spoke on the topic of Social Media, explaining  the background to Social Media as we experience it and also outlined how Cumann na mBunscol can use platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to promote its activities.

His expertise on the topic and his generosity in sharing his knowledge in a user-friendly manner was greatly appreciated at the time. Our photo shows Shay at the 2017 with then Cathaoirleach Bernie Ryan.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Shay's family and friends at this difficult time.
