All set for Cumann na mBunscol season in Meath   04/03/2019

The A.G.M. of Cumann na mBunscol, Coiste na Mí took place on Monday February 11th at Gaelscoil Éanna, Navan.

Chairman Willie Lyons welcomed everyone and reports were read by the Chairman, Secretary; Nodlag O’ Neill - Forde, Treasurer; Mary Devine and PRO; Caroline Gibbons.

All reported on a very busy year for schools around the county in mini sevens, athletics, cross country and football competitions. Thanks were expressed to all coordinators, teachers and divisional organisers in each competition for giving their time voluntarily. The support of retired teachers on finals days was also commended. The chairman acknowledged the contribution of outgoing rounders co-ordinator, Mary Walsh, and wished her the best on her retirement from teaching at St. Joseph’s N.S., Navan. He also congratulated all the boys and girls who took part in the INTO/Respect Exhibition Go-Games on All-Ireland Semi-final and Final days. All G.A.A. Clubs and Coiste na Mí were thanked for the use of their pitches and facilities during the year.

Gratitude was expressed to The Meath Chronicle and Hogan Stand Meath for their excellent coverage and reports that they gave to all competitions during the year. The Meath Chronicle were thanked also for their generous sponsorship of the Spirit of the Final Awards for the football finals in June and November.

A new initiative was introduced last May between teams from Cumann na Mí and Cumann na mBunscol, an Lú. Four teams from each county played a tournament at Darver, Louth’s Centre of Excellence. This was greatly praised and it is hoped to broaden this to include other counties. A similar exhibition also took place in Drumcondra for the girls’ football team and in County Laois for the camogie team. James Battersby of Boardsmill N.S. set up a 5th class football competition between local schools, honoring former principal Peadar Ó Liatháin. Such initiatives are greatly encouraged by Cumann na mBunscol.

Congratulations were extended to two past pupils of Dunshaughlin N.S. and Gaelscoil na Ríthe, Dún Seachlainn - Matthew Costello and Luke Mitchell - on being selected on the Minor Football Team of the Year 2018. The Meath Ladies Football Team were congratulated on reaching the All-Ireland Intermediate Final.
