Dan O Flaherty named as winner of the Pat Trainor Award for 2017   16/03/2017

The Pat Trainor Award for Lifetime Contribution to Cumann na mBunscol honours the memory of one of Cumann na mBunscol's greatest servants. Pat Trainor was a native of the Ardoyne  in Belfast and his entire teaching career was spent in Holy Child Primary School in the city. It is an award that recognises decades of service to Gaelic Games in primary schools.

This year's winner is Dan O Flaherty of Cumann na mBunscol Loch Garman. Dan, in his acceptance speech, noted that he was following in the footsteps of previous winners such as Jerry Walsh ( 2015) and Paddy Keane (2016)... all Kerrymen just like Dan who is a native of the Maharees, near Castlegregory.

Dan’s first appointment as a teacher in 1967 was in St. John Vianney NS in Bonnybrook  in Dublin and he moved to Mary Queen of Angels NS, Ballyfermot in 1971. Dan relocated to Wexford in 1977 to teach in Taghmon NS along with his wife, Noeleen. He became principal in the school in 1992 and remained there until his retirement in 2007. Dan has been involved with the Rackard Leagues since he moved to Wexford and, while delighted to be the recipient of the award, he highlighted the work of Jim Dempsey as Rúnaí

Pat Trainor's widow, Ann, and his daughter Aine McGlinchey,  were guests of Cumann na mBunscol on the night.
